Synthetic Jewellery : The Magic of Cubic Zirconia

Abigail Smith

Jewellery has always been a way to express oneself, and with the advent of synthetic gemstones, the possibilities have become endless. One such gemstone that has gained popularity in the jewellery world is Cubic Zirconia (CZ).

Cubic Zirconia is a synthetic, diamond-like gemstone often used as a substitute for real diamonds in jewellery. It was first created in a lab in the late 70s and quickly became a popular low-cost alternative to diamonds. Unlike natural diamonds, which are formed deep within the earth over millions of years, cubic zirconia is man-made using advanced industrial processes. This means it can be produced in large quantities, making it much more affordable and accessible for everyday folks.

Cubic Zirconia is made from a mixture of high purity zirconium oxide powders stabilized with magnesium and calcium. The process involves melting zirconium oxide powder with stabilizers like magnesium and calcium. After being removed from hours of heat, crystals form and stabilize. The crystals are then cut and polished.

One of the biggest advantages of cubic zirconia is its clarity and brilliance. Unlike many natural gemstones, which can contain blemishes that detract from their beauty, cubic zirconia is pretty much visually flawless because they are made in a lab. One reason it is often compared with diamonds is due to its high refractive index, which is a fancy way of saying it reflects light in a way that makes it sparkly and bright. Cubic zirconia’s fire or light dispersion gives off rainbow colors as well, making it naturally stunning and requiring minimal enhancement during jewellery  image editing.

Cubic Zirconia is primarily utilized in place of diamonds for jewellery and other decorations. It is often used as a diamond simulant because it looks similar to diamonds and is much cheaper. From rings and earrings to necklaces and bracelets, cubic zirconia can be cut and shaped into various designs to complement a wide range of styles.

In conclusion, synthetic jewellery made from cubic zirconia offers a beautiful, affordable alternative to diamond jewellery. With its dazzling brilliance and versatility, it’s no wonder that cubic zirconia has become a favorite in the world of synthetic jewellery.
